Tips for Replacing Your Home’s Flooring

What to Consider When Replacing Your Flooring

Changing your flooring is typically due to damage, the need for repairs, or a desire to update the look of your space by selecting a new pattern that complements your furniture and brightens up the room. Here’s what you need to know when replacing your old flooring with SPC flooring.

  1. It’s important to determine the type of existing flooring, such as laminate, parquet, tile, marble, or vinyl flooring, as their thickness varies. The thickness of your current floor impacts the installation process for SPC flooring. For example, if you’re overlaying SPC flooring onto existing tiles, you can install it directly without worrying about the thickness, provided the existing tiles are in good condition.

    General Flooring Thickness:
    • Laminate Flooring: 8mm or 12mm
    • Parquet Flooring: Approximately 1-2 cm
    • Tile: Approximately 6mm
    • Marble Flooring: Approximately 1-2 cm
    • Adhesive-backed Vinyl Flooring: 2-3mm
  2. If the current tiles are not heavily damaged, swollen, or uneven, SPC flooring can be installed directly over them. Minor damage can be repaired before installation. However, if there is significant structural damage, it is recommended to remove the old tiles to ensure proper installation.

  1. For laminate flooring, most installations can be completed within one day for areas up to 50 square meters, provided the subfloor is in good condition. However, if the subfloor is in poor condition, preparation work such as leveling may be required. Other flooring types, such as tile or marble, also often require subfloor adjustments to ensure the SPC flooring is properly installed and level.
  2. The thickness of the new flooring may affect the height of existing skirting boards or the door clearance. Traditional baseboards are usually 4 inches, while modern skirting is often only 3 inches, which may require wall paint touch-ups but gives a more spacious feel.
  3. For ground floors or areas near bathrooms, it is recommended to use a moisture barrier or waterproof plastic sheeting before installation to prevent damage and shrinking of the SPC flooring from ground moisture.
